Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa)
Quinoa is a flowering plant which is most often grown for the mature seeds which are used as a grain. Compared to other grain-type seeds and true grains, quinoa seeds are easily harvested and processed. They contain high amounts of protein and dietary fiber, as well as B vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese. They are also gluten-free.
We grow a variety called Rainbow which is well-suited to cool, wet and windy conditions. While immature, this quinoa is green but as the seed ripens, the plants turn different colours. The open flower-shape sheds water easily, meaning good seed is usually produced even in wetter summers or in damp climates.
Plants will grow up to 2 metres tall so need some protection from wind or staking. Flowering in July/August, and seed is ready in Sept/Oct. Young leaves can be used like spinach.
Seeds germinate very quickly - sometimes within 24 hours. Start in modules/small pots (put a few seeds in each pot and thin out to leave the strongest seedling in each) under glass in spring and transplant outdoors when all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 50-60 cm apart. Can also be sown directly in the ground in late spring (or earlier, protected with cloches).
