Cucumber 'Wautoma' (Cucumis sativus)
This heirloom, open-pollinated variety is fairly early fruiting (60 days after germination) and has great disease resistance (It is resistant to anthracnose, angular leaf blight, cucumber mosaic virus, downy mildew, powdery mildew, and scab). 10-15cm cucumbers are produced on vigorous, 1-1.5m vines. It is non-bitter and burpless, and excellent for pickling and salting, or can be left to grow bigger and used as a slicing/salad cucumber.
Wautoma can be grown outdoors in milder parts of the UK but plants under cover will fruit more heavily, and will start cropping earlier in the season.
Being non-hybrid cucumbers they are much easier and less fussy to grow than the hybrids. You don't need to pick the male flowers off, and they don't need any special training - basically just plant them and let them get on with it.
Start the seed off somewhere warm in small individual pots from late April (mid May if you're going to grow them on outside) and plant them out once they have 3 to 4 true leaves. Provide some support outdoors - under cover the are quite happy sprawling on the ground or can be trained up netting to save space.
