This year we decided to try something different with our kale cuttings and planted them in deep root-trainers. These are designed for growing trees in but they have worked fairly well with the kales. The idea was to encourage the formation of a large, firm root-ball on a small plant so that they would be easy to ship and quick to establish once planted out. Here are some ewiger kohl cuttings on the day they were planted:
After growth had begun, we nipped out the top bud and cut the larger leaves away. We also fed them regularly with seaweed and comfrey. Here are the same cuttings after a few weeks:
And here you can see the roots have grown well and formed the solid root-ball we were after:
This is basically a giant plug-plant. The roots are strong and healthy and when planted out the plants should begin new growth quickly. This plant is ewiger kohl and we have also grown some variegated Daubentons kale and purple tree collards the same way. We have some of each available in our shop.
